Sign off the work zone
To sign off a work zone, set up four areas: advance warning, a taper with cones or drums, the work zone and the end. SIMAQ has the full kit: 28″ (71 cm) cones, 91 cm channelizer drums with 2 reflective bands, 115 cm delineator posts, mesh, tape and reflective vests.

The taper is sized by road speed: the faster the traffic, the longer the cone funnel.

Clean reflective or no reflective: a dust-dulled cone at 10 pm is invisible. Wash the kit weekly.

Vest on BEFORE stepping out of the vehicle: the moment you leave the cab, you're on the road.

Working at night → drums and delineators with reflective bands, plus light on the zone: cones alone aren't enough.

What signage equipment do I need to work on a street?
At minimum: cones or drums for the taper, delineators or mesh to close off the work zone, caution tape and a reflective vest for everyone. How many cones depends on the road speed and your project's traffic plan.
Cones or channelizer drums?
Short job, daytime, slow street → 28″ cones: quick to set and pick up. Fast road, a job lasting days or night work → 91 cm drums: they're more visible and their weighted base stands up better to traffic wind.
How many cones do I need to close a lane?
It depends on the road speed: the faster the traffic, the longer the taper and the more cones. Your project's approved traffic-management plan sets it; the advisor helps you build the kit from that plan.
Why can't a cone be seen at night?
Because the reflective band is dirty: a dusty cone barely reflects headlights. Wash cones and drums every week and replace any with a torn band.
What reflective vest should you wear on site?
A mesh vest with reflective stripes, in orange or cyan — whichever contrasts most with your surroundings or your project requires. Put it on before stepping out of the vehicle, not once you reach the work zone.
