What signage does my work zone need?

Short answer

Build the kit by function: channel (28″ cones for closures of hours; 91 cm drums if the closure stays overnight or lasts days; delineator posts on long lines), warn and close off (caution tape, 1 m high mesh around trenches and reflective tape on edges) and protect (a vest per person and speed bumps at accesses). How many cones or drums and how far apart is set by the approved traffic-management plan; here you work out the rest with your measurements.

Protect the crew

  • How many cones, drums and posts, and how far apart, is set by the traffic-management plan approved for your project: it depends on road speed. This tool doesn't make it up.
  • Never lots of cones with no advance warning: a closure has warning, taper, work area and end zone.
  • Tape alone around an open trench doesn't protect: the mesh closes it off.

How it's calculated

  1. Daytime hours → cones; night, days or weeks → drums.
  2. Open trench → perimeter mesh; if it lasts days or there's night work, reflective tape on the edges; long line → delineator posts.
  3. Rolls = metres ÷ roll length (mesh 50 m, caution tape 250 m, reflective tape 50 m), rounded up.
  4. Speed bump per access = (width − 2 end caps of 19 cm) ÷ 122 cm module, rounded up, plus its 2 end caps.
  5. Vests: one per person on the road.

FAQ

Cone or drum?

Cones for maneuvers and closures of hours; drums when signage stays overnight or traffic is heavy: taller, more reflective area and less blow-over from truck wind.

How many cones do I need?

The traffic-management plan approved for your project sets it: it depends on road speed, the warning area and the taper. This tool doesn't make it up.

Is tape around a trench enough?

No. Tape warns but stops no one; the 1 m high mesh physically closes off the trench.

Which vest?

Everyone on the road wears one. The orange mesh vest is the crew vest; the cyan one meets CE EN471 Class 2, for when the contract requires that standard.
